Mike Whelan

President and Owner

A seasoned executive with more than 40 years of experience in customer service, sales, marketing, consulting and management, Mike has earned a reputation for helping organizations meet objectives and improve performance and profit.

Prior to founding Sporting the Stars, he served as Vice President of ChoiceHealth Leasing, a Citibank private label program that helped doctors throughout the U.S. start, purchase or expand their practices.

In addition to having a keen understanding and love of business, he has a passion for sports. Growing up in the Charleston, SC area, Mike played sports competitively throughout his childhood and even today continues to play in a senior fast-pitch baseball league with the New Jersey Indians.

While visiting Philadelphia with his family when he was eight, he attended his first professional ballgame at Connie Mack Stadium. He became an avid and loyal Phillies fan, proudly wearing Phillies logos. He remembers listening to the radio with his dad one Father’s Day while Phillies pitcher Jim Bunning pitched a perfect game against the New York Mets, a moment and bond he will never forget. Little did he know that after graduating with a BS degree from the College of Charleston he would move to West Chester, PA. Mike’s had the opportunity to coach and enjoy his two children growing up as Philadelphia sports fans.

With his passion for sports, people and giving back to the community, Mike knew Sporting the Stars would be the ideal business for him!

Bob Handschuh

Regional Marketing Consultant

While serving as a board member for a local charity, Bob met Mike Whelan at an event benefiting the organization and knew immediately that he wanted to become a part of Mike’s team. Having the opportunity to work with charities while incorporating his knowledge of sports and customer service skills made his decision to join Sporting the Stars an easy one. He previously taught special education in Bucks County and has worked with numerous special needs individuals; in addition, he assisted in coaching softball and basketball. He continues to work with special needs individuals on a part-time basis, working primarily with children diagnosed with autism and Asperger’s syndrome. After teaching, Bob owned and operated a Tastykake sales route for 22 years, developing strong customer relationships, which he has maintained despite being out of the business for several years.

Bob grew up in Delaware County as a sports fanatic and participated in many, but had his best success in baseball, as a pitcher. Although the competitive baseball years are behind him, he enjoys playing golf and volleyball. Some of Bob’s fondest sports memories were attending two NBA All Star Games, several Phillies, Flyers and 76ers playoff games, and the 1980 NFC Championship victory by the Eagles over the Dallas Cowboys at Veterans Stadium. In addition, he is a partial season ticket holder to the Phillies. Bob is married with three daughters and resides in the Springfield, PA area.
